Challenge
Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan
The Issyk-Kul Alpine Circuit is a challenging 3-5 day trek covering 60 kilometers through the pristine Tien Shan mountains surrounding Central Asia's second-largest alpine lake. This remote high-altitude adventure features the demanding Dungurome Pass crossing at 3,820 meters, dramatic glacial valleys, and stunning alpine lakes. The circuit combines desert-like terrain with lush meadows and offers encounters with traditional Kyrgyz nomadic culture. Hikers must be self-sufficient with camping gear and navigation skills, as the route crosses remote wilderness with challenging river fords and no resupply opportunities. Best attempted June through September when high passes are snow-free.
