Mount Taranaki
Egmont National Park, New Zealand
About This Hike
Mount Taranaki stands alone on New Zealand’s west coast, a dormant stratovolcano and sacred ancestor in Māori cosmology. Its near-perfect cone rises from dense forests and misty valleys. The mountain is tied to a story of exile and heartbreak, and remains a living being to local iwi (tribes). Climbs are steep and can be dangerous in weather, but deeply rewarding.
